What is mulch?

Mulch is a layer of material applied to the surface of soil. It is primarily made of organic material and can come in a variety of forms; most made of tree bark, wood chips, pine straw, moss, grass clippings, or leaves. Other substances like manure, compost, or rubber are also popular but tree barks, wood chips and pine straws are the most available and widely used. It greatly conserves the soil moisture (up to 80%), improves fertility and health of the soil, reduces weed growth and enhances the visual appeal of the area. Mulch is usually, but not exclusively, organic in nature.
